Sancerre as it was meant to taste before the appellation got famous. Thomas-Labaille is a multi-generational Chavignol family (founded by Claude Thomas in the early 1950s; Florence Thomas and her husband Jean-Paul Labaille have led the domaine since 1994), hand-harvested, low-intervention, with their flagship coming from the storied Monts Damnés slope. L'Authentique is the estate's multi-parcel cuvée, drawing from Kimmeridgian limestone vines around Chavignol that average about twenty-five years. Native-yeast fermentation in fiberglass and cement, lees aging in steel for four to six months, no filtration before bottling. The result is Sancerre with grip and grace: lemon, grapefruit, green apple, white flower, the chalky-saline pull of true Kimmeridgian terroir. The 2025 is fresh, bright, and immediately gulpable; if you've been buying Sancerre by reputation, this is the one to buy by taste.

Jean-Paul Labaille quit his job as a civil servant to take over his father-in-law's vineyard in Chavignol, and that decision altered everything. Now he's custodian of prime old vines planted on Kimmeridgian soils, some on the steep slopes of Les Monts Damnées. Fermented native, aged on lees, bottled unfiltered, the wines emerge rich, round, layered, with a subtle nose and a finish that doesn't quit. This is what happens when ambition meets limestone and age.
