Domaine Ciringa in Styria, Slovenia, focuses on single-vineyard, single-grape expression from Ried Ciringa (Slovenian name for Zieregg). The vineyard sits at the border between Slovenia and Austria, representing pure terroir expression from this distinctive parcel. The flagship 'Pruh' (meaning quarry) comes from vines growing in almost pure limestone—a 60-million-year-old limestone reef formerly covered by the ancient Paratethys sea. Continuously south and southwest-facing on steep mountain hillsides, the vineyard yields low production (about one kilo per vine at approximately 5,000 vines per hectare). This 2018 Sauvignon Blanc underwent spontaneous fermentation and élevage for 66 months in large used oak barrels, receiving Demeter and Respekt biodynamic certification. At six years old, the wine shows mature complexity. Only single casks bottled in years with right character.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

"The 2018 Sauvignon Blanc Ciringa Pruh makes itself known with a spicy burst of crushed lemon rind complicated by hints of ginger and minty herbs. This is plush on the palate—soft and supple yet quite serious. Saline minerals cut through its rich textures like a hot knife, and citrus-infused orchard fruits cascade throughout. The 2018 finishes with tremendous length, leaving a sensation of liquid stone as tart zests of lime add freshness despite its youthful tension. This is a bucket list wine for lovers of savory and salty Sauvignon Blanc. It’s sourced from pure limestone soils and matured for 66 months on the lees." -Eric Guido

"From vines about 25 years old and aged on the lees for 54 months, the 2018 Pruh Sauvignon Blanc is clear, intense and spicy on the concentrated and phenolic, lemon-scented nose. Dense and lush on the palate, this is a full-bodied, saline and tannic Sauvignon with lingering salinity and challenging grip. Still very tight and young, this is a promising and substantial cru from the Slovenian part of the Zieregg. Bottled in December last year. 13.5% stated alcohol. Glass stopper." -Stephan Reinhardt
