Scala is a family-run producer that works mostly with Calabria's noble grape of Gaglioppo, which is rarely produced outside of Italy's boot-toe and almost never outside of southern Italy. Like Italy's other noble varieties, it normally produces a wine of power and structure. As a reference point you might think of a spicier version of Aglianico, although genetic tests suggest it's an offspring of Sangiovese, and we've seen some commentators describe it as a hypothetical combination of Nebbiolo and Pinot Noir! You'll just have to see for yourself.
Scala farms organically and uses a light touch in the winery—fermentation is at a low temperature and elevage is strictly in cement tanks. The result is a wine with beautiful structure, complexity, and refinement.
