Weingut Schloss Gobelsburg from Kamptal, Niederösterreich (Lower Austria), produces Pinot Noir Reserve from the Ried Sachsenberg vineyard. The vineyard sits on crushed gravelly soils south of Gobelsburg with calcareous content allowing good drainage—ideal for Pinot Noir. The wine is aged 18 months in Austrian oak barrels, then 6 months in bottle. It's unfiltered, so sediments may develop.

The 2021 Pinot Noir Reserve shows fully ripened raspberries and lightly roasted almonds with rose scent. The palate is somewhat powerful—youthful, medium- to full-bodied, surprisingly rich in tannins. Falstaff described fresh red forest berry confit, hint of heart cherry, floral nuances, delicate tobacco and nougat hints; juicy, elegant character; delicate fruit sweetness at core, fine acidity, mineral-lemon nuances. At five years old, the wine is showing excellent complexity. The unfiltered, unfined approach creates a wine of genuine character and aging potential.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 93
"The 2021 Pinot Noir Reserve still crackles with a seductive note of flint. Beneath that, redcurrant and wild raspberry emerge on the nose. The palate reprises these berry notes and adds tart cherry alongside a woodland savor reminiscent of lichen and conifer, released as the fine tannins melt after a delicious crunch. A classy, refined Pinot Noir with immense charm, generosity and poised structure." -Anne Krebiehl, MW
