The Lafond family has farmed the Southern Rhône since 1780. Jean-Pierre Lafond built the current cellar in 1970, naming it after a famous racehorse, "Roquepine," rendered in the Provençal style as "Roc-Épine." The family acquired their Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyards in 2001—a small 8,700-square-meter parcel yielding just 4,000 bottles annually. The blend is 80% Grenache from vines over 60 years old, with 10% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre, all farmed biodynamically. The 2010 vintage is legendary in Châteauneuf-du-Pape: a dry summer following rainy spring produced tiny yields of extraordinary concentration. These wines were built to age—rich, complex, and remarkably balanced. Now fifteen years on, the wine is approaching a drinking window that could extend another decade or more. One of the Southern Rhône's finest values from one of its finest vintages.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 90
"Opaque ruby. Red berry compote and cherry pit on the pungent, spice-accented nose. Chewy and sharply focused, offering intense redcurrant and bitter cherry flavors and a hint of dark chocolate. Dusty tannins add grip to a long, spicy finish. This wine could use some time to unwind but shows very good promise." -Josh Raynolds

Robert Parker

"While the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Roc-Epine has closed down slightly, it remains a sexy Chateauneuf filled with sumptuous black currant, black cherry and raspberry flavors interwoven with garrigue, licorice and roasted Provencal herbs. Full-bodied with good acidity and precision, it is somewhat forward for a 2010, and should drink well over the next 10-15 years." -Robert M. Parker, Jr.

WS 92
"This delivers a delicious core of plum, boysenberry and blackberry fruit, studded with licorice, fruitcake and roasted fig notes. Offers the grip of the vintage, but not as dense as the top examples, so one for drinking now while you cellar the big boys. Drink now through 2022. 800 cases made."
