The 2019 vintage gave her the goods—structure, depth, and that ethereal Stella touch. The wine is pure Sangiovese but walks its own path: lifted, floral, wild and energetic, with silky fruit and earthy grip that feels more like Burgundy in Tuscany clothes than textbook Brunello.

Since 1992, Stella di Campalto has been producing utterly classic Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino, in the rearview of legendary mentors and neighbors (Poggio di Sotto, Ciacci Piccolomini, Uccelliera, you get it). A genuine gift to the drinker, Stella tends to age her wines even longer than most old-schoolers, and as a result, they are often more ready to drink. It only takes one bottle to recognize that these are soulful wines.

"The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Bacia is deep and complex, mixing black cherries with cedar box, autumnal spice, mentholated herbs and a dusting of cocoa. This speaks in bass tones, with dark, saturating red fruit and minerals excited by a core of brisk acidity and a balsamic tinge that defines the close. It finishes with tremendous length, staining and intense, leaving a primary concentration of cranberry and blackberry to mingle with sweet tannins. The 2019 Bacia is a bombshell beauty. Of note, this bottling may be renamed prior to its release in March 2025." -Eric Guido
