Somloi Vandor is one of our favorite Hungarian producers; from an extinct volcano on the edge of Lake Balaton, it's a source for extraordinary examples of terroir-driven, indigenous Hungarian varieties, all in minuscule quantities. Winemaker Tamas learned to make wine in Eger, home of Hungary's famous red wine, Bull's Blood, but once he set eyes on Somlò's incredible terroir, he was hooked. His farming is organic, and in both the vines and the cellars, there's minimal intervention; the wines burst with freshness and a purity unique to those winemakers who highlight a grape's true character rather than muddying it with wood or chemicals.
