The 2020 Domaine Roulot Meursault Premier Cru “Clos des Bouchères” Monopole is an extraordinary Chardonnay, exemplifying the precision and artistry for which Jean-Marc Roulot is renowned. This monopole vineyard, exclusively owned and cultivated by Domaine Roulot, is situated in one of Meursault’s most prized terroirs. Known for its limestone-rich soils and cool microclimate, “Clos des Bouchères” consistently produces wines of remarkable tension, minerality, and finesse.

In the glass, the wine presents a pale gold hue with shimmering reflections. The nose is complex and captivating, offering aromas of lemon zest, green apple, and white peach, complemented by floral notes of acacia and honeysuckle. Subtle hints of crushed stones, flint, and toasted hazelnuts add depth and intrigue. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, with a silky texture supported by vibrant acidity. The flavors unfold gracefully, showcasing citrus, orchard fruits, and a touch of salinity, underpinned by a chalky mineral backbone. The finish is long, precise, and impeccably clean, leaving a lasting impression of elegance and purity.

The 2020 vintage, characterized by warm and even growing conditions, lends this wine a ripe and approachable fruit profile while maintaining the hallmark freshness and tension of Domaine Roulot’s style. This Premier Cru pairs beautifully with dishes like seared scallops, lobster in beurre blanc, or creamy mushroom risotto. While it is already compelling for its balance and expressiveness, it has the structure and complexity to evolve gracefully over the next 10–15 years, gaining additional nuance and depth.

Domaine Roulot’s “Clos des Bouchères” is a benchmark for Meursault Premier Cru, offering a combination of elegance, precision, and terroir-driven character that makes it a treasure for Burgundy enthusiasts and collectors alike.

The name Roulot is now a synonym for the very best wine that the village of Meursault can offer. It is rather remarkable when you consider that just 2 generations back the Roulot's were known as producers of Burgundian brandy and eau de vie. But Guy Roulot began leveraging the family's distilling success to purchase small plots of vines in Meursault and by the 1970's was known as a pioneer for producing top quality chardonnay from distinct parcels or ""lieu-dits"".

When Guy passed away unexpectedly in the early '80's his son Jean-Marc was pursuing acting in Paris. In 1989 he returned to take on the reigns of the small Domaine and in the following decades built on his fathers success so well that the wines are now extremely hard to acquire and to afford for most of us.

Professional Reviews

Burghound

"Once again, the nose is quite cool and restrained with its array of pretty and elegant acacia blossom, lilac, exotic jasmine tea and lemon-lime hints. The elegance continues on the exquisitely refined medium weight flavors that possess really lovely detail that carries over to the lightly stony, very dry and sneaky long finale. As is almost always the case, this is an understated wine of class and grace that should be approachable young but offer up to a decade's worth of potential improvement."

"The 2020 Meursault Clos des Bouchères 1er Cru is positively stunning. The aromatics along are so inviting. Gracious and deceptively light in body, the 2020 has so much to offer. White pepper, crushed rocks, grapefruit, mint and salt lend brightness to this mesmerizing, high-toned Meursault. The Bouchères is one of the highlights in this range from Jean-Marc Roulot." -Vinous

Robert Parker

"The 2020 Meursault 1er Cru Clos des Bouchères is excellent, exhibiting aromas of citrus oil and pear mingled with notes of fresh bread, dried white flowers and iodine. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and enveloping, it's ample but precise, with a satiny attack that segues into a vibrant mid-palate, concluding with a long, saline finish. If Les Charmes is denser and blockier, the Clos des Bouchères is finer-boned and more ethereal."

Decanter

"As with neighbouring Gouttes d'Or, the Clos de Bouchères - a 1.37ha monopole acquired in 2011 - is a precocious, early-ripening site, picked earlier in 2020 than its neighbours, with more potential alcohol (13.65%) and less acidity. Despite the richness, there is a lively character here that makes the wine perhaps more dynamic than its neighbour, even if it doesn't quite reach the depth of Perrières. Roulot vinifies with moderate use of new wood - and his habitual winemaking savvy - to yield an unforgettable wine of charm and distinction."
