Mouzon-Leroux’s Champagne “L’Opiniâtre” Blanc de Blancs 2016 [Sans Soufre] is an exceptional, sulfur-free Champagne crafted from 100% Chardonnay sourced from the Grand Cru village of Verzy in the Montagne de Reims. Known for their dedication to biodynamic viticulture and minimal intervention, Mouzon-Leroux vinifies this cuvée without added sulfur to allow the pure expression of Chardonnay and the terroir’s chalky soils to come through with remarkable clarity. Vinified and aged in oak barrels, “L’Opiniâtre” captures the essence of the 2016 vintage with depth, precision, and freshness.

On the nose, this Blanc de Blancs offers enticing aromas of citrus blossom, green apple, and white peach, layered with hints of almond, chalk, and a subtle flintiness. The palate is vibrant and precise, showcasing flavors of lemon zest, ripe pear, and a pronounced mineral character that speaks to Verzy’s unique terroir. The creamy, fine mousse adds elegance, while the sans soufre (no added sulfur) approach enhances its natural, lively finish with a lasting impression of freshness and purity.

“L’Opiniâtre” pairs beautifully with delicate dishes like seafood, sashimi, and light creamy cheeses, where its vibrant acidity and minerality can shine. The 2016 vintage imparts a harmonious balance of concentration and freshness, making this a distinctive Champagne that appeals to connoisseurs looking for a natural, terroir-driven Blanc de Blancs with both depth and transparency.

More about this wine

Grapes | 100% Chardonnay

Vineyards | Chardonnay grown in the southern, chalky section of Verzy Grand Cru. Strong presence of silex.

Vinification | Indigenous yeast fermentation, full malo. Aged eight months in used Cadus barrels. Barrel Selection of Chardonnay identified as the most “tightly wound” with ability to age in cellar without sulfur. 58 months en tirage; zero dosage.

Mouzon-Leroux is the only specialist we can think of from Verzy, one of the great Grand Crus of Montagne. This is pretty neat, because Verzy is a rare Grand Cru that actually points northeast, so it has very cool vineyards produces wines where mineral is far out in front of fruit. All of this is enhanced through organic and biodynamic farming, and a hands-off approach in the winery -- malos are allowed to occur naturally and virtually no sulphur is used. Mouzon-Leroux is one of the elite producers who can claim membership in the Special Club.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
