Le Ragnaie is the greatest thing to emerge in Montalcino so far this century. It may be the greatest thing to emerge in Montalcino since the rise of Soldera, with whom they have much in common: an uncompromising adherence to tradition (aging exclusively in large neutral Slavonian oak barrels, ultra-long macerations), natural farming, minimal intervention in the cellar, and excellent terroir.

But there is one way in which Le Ragnaie stands apart from Soldera that makes their wines even more extreme: high altitudes. Le Ragnaie farms the highest altitude vines in Brunello di Montalcino! Some vineyards are so high up that they are above Brunello di Montalcino's legal limit of 600 meters.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Passo del Lume Spento opens with a mentholated freshness, while crushed stone and minty herbs complicate dusty, dried strawberries. The Brunello di Montalcino Passo del Spento has a juicy character and is incredibly fresh. It shows its minerality in the foreground, while a tart wave of wild berries descends on the palate. The finish is exciting, powerful and primary, with a layer of fine-grained tannins balanced by a hint of residual acidity. This is a spice bomb that nevertheless has the energy to balance." -Vinous

"This wine kisses the sky with fruit from vines planted in 2012 at the highest point of the appellation. This is a wine to keep an eye on in the future, especially as these vines age. The Le Ragnaie 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Passo del Lume Spento has a fine and direct bouquet with vibrant red fruits, cranberries, pressed rose and rosemary flowers. The fruit and floral components are very pronounced, and the earthiness that we find in the other wines is not as pronounced. Instead, it is mineral and salty. Crisp fruit and powdery tannins make for a very long and polished finish with an alcohol content of 13.5 %. This wine is fluid and more of a shape-shifter."

"Shiny and straight medium ruby red. Concentrated and refined on the nose. Multi-layered. Lots of juicy red fruit, underpinned with super-fine, long tannins. Super-elegant, mineral and long."

"Campinoti’s highest altitude single-vineyard bottling comes from a one-hectare plot planted in 2011 at a lofty 621 metres. The third release as a Brunello, it hits its stride with the 2019 vintage. While still reserved in aromas, this sings with inner mouth perfumes of white blossom and rose against a backdrop of sour red cherry and pomegranate. The mouth-cleansing tannins are linear, and brisk acidity whisks the wine across the palate. Slender but not bony, this has sufficient flesh to harmonise the structure. Really quite thrilling in its sinewy, chiselled personality."
