Grauburgunder is Pinot Gris, and in Simone Adams's hands it is a world away from the watery stuff the name usually conjures. Grown on the limestone-rich soils of Ingelheim in northern Rheinhessen and farmed biodynamically, this is a textural, food-friendly white with real cut. Adams works with native yeasts and minimal intervention, so it comes across as clean and honest rather than fussy. An easy, versatile bottle for the table.

Antonio Galloni

90 points

"The 2024 Grauburgunder Ingelheim shimmers with a beautifully pale pink hue. It was made from several parcels, one of which had skin contact for 64 hours. The rest was directly pressed, resulting in a lot of backbone. This was made in large barrel only. The palate has fill, smoothness and freshness, with lovely texture and vivid, enlivening, luminous brightness." —Anne Krebiehl, MW

Robert Parker

92 points

"The pink-orange colored 2024 Ingelheim Grauburgunder is pure yet intense and chalky on the elegant and yeasty nose that shows bitter orange and lemon zest aromas. Elegant and almost smooth in its fine texture, this is a medium-bodied, savory and firmly structured dry Pinot Gris with good fruit intensity, sur lie texture and a savory-saline Ingelheim terroir expression with stimulating phenol bitters in the finish and aftertaste. A smaller part was kept on the mash for two and a half to three days, but the main part was pressed in whole clusters. The wine was fermented without sedimentation in stücks and an 1,800-liter oak vat for 10 months. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in April 2026." —Stephan Reinhardt

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
