Founded in 1995 by Alberto Antonini (former chief winemaker at Antinori) and Antonio Morescalchi. "Hormigas" (ants) references both ants that ate their newly planted vines and the Argentine saying "un trabajo de hormigas" meaning humble, patient work. They purchased 206 hectares in Luján de Cuyo, with first wines released in 1997. Alberto holds degrees from Florence, Bordeaux, and UC Davis. The Malbec Clásico is certified organic and fermented with indigenous yeasts in concrete. The Jardín de Hormigas vineyard in Altamira at 1,200 meters is certified organic with 40% native flora for biodiversity.

More about Altos las Hormigas

In 1995, when everyone else was planting Cabernet Sauvignon, winemaker Alberto Antonini and entrepreneur Antonio Morescalchi bet everything on Malbec in Mendoza. They were right. Altos las Hormigas pioneered terroir-driven Malbec with biodynamic farming, minimal intervention, and deep knowledge of places like Altamira and Gualtallary. Antonini's global palate brings new ideas every vintage. These are unshowy, ambitious wines from people who actually understand what they're doing.
