What is this wine?
Antinori’s Matarocchio 2019 is the flagship wine of the Guado al Tasso estate in Bolgheri on Tuscany’s coast. A pure Cabernet Franc sourced from a single vineyard of the same name, Matarocchio represents the pinnacle of precision and terroir expression in the Antinori portfolio. The vines grow on clay-limestone soils that produce small, concentrated berries. After careful hand-harvesting, the wine is fermented in temperature-controlled tanks and aged for 18 months in new French oak before extended bottle aging.

Why get this wine?
Matarocchio is one of Italy’s most extraordinary Cabernet Francs—profound, elegant, and rare. Produced only in top vintages, it showcases the perfect marriage of Tuscan sunshine and Bordeaux-like refinement. The 2019 vintage is exceptional: deep yet poised, with remarkable aromatic complexity and structure. A collectible masterpiece that stands alongside Italy’s greatest reds.

What does this wine taste like?
Intense and layered, with aromas of blackcurrant, graphite, violet, and tobacco. The palate is rich yet refined, showing dark fruit, cocoa, and Mediterranean herbs wrapped in ultra-fine tannins. The finish is long, savory, and impeccably balanced.

When should you drink this wine?
Best from 2026–2045. Decant 2–3 hours when young to reveal its depth. Superb with grilled meats, lamb, or truffle dishes.

"The 2019 Matarocchio is the most elegant and refined edition of pure Cabernet Franc yet. There is plenty of aromatic Franc intensity and tons of depth, but less of the more heavily extracted style that marked the early years. Don’t get me wrong, that approach can work with Franc, as those wines showed, but I find greater delineation, focus and cut here. In 2018 and 2020, this juice was used to improve Guado al Tasso. The 2019 spent 18 months in 100% new oak, all Taransaud barrels." —Antonio Galloni

"This iconic Guado al Tasso wine is now part of the Bolgheri Superiore appellation. The previous vintage was not produced and we now jump forward to the beautiful 2019 Bolgheri Superiore Matarocchio that should hit the market in 2023. This pure expression of Cabernet Franc paints the palate with black fruit, baker's chocolate, pressed rose and fragrant mint. There is plenty of crushed stone and pencil shaving as well. Cabernet Franc is a comfortable protagonist, and the wine delivers power, intensity and depth over an elegant, full-bodied mouthfeel." —Monica Larner

More about Antinori

Antinori traces its story back to 1385 when Giovanni di Piero Antinori joined the Guild of Winemakers in Florence. Today, the 26th generation (led by Marquis Piero and his three daughters) oversees 20 million bottles annually across 150 labels from estates in Montalcino, Bolgheri, and Chianti Classico. They literally engineered the Super-Tuscan revolution with Tignanello in the '70s. This is a family that doesn't just make wine—it shapes the entire conversation around what Italian wine can be.
