Traditional Barolo from a family making wine in Monforte d'Alba since 1820—six generations. Mario Fontana formalized the estate in 1995 with his mother Elda, wife Luisa, and sons Edoardo and Vasco. 4-5 hectares of Nebbiolo from three crus: Villero (Castiglione Falletto), Valletti/Mariondino (Castiglione Falletto), and Gallinotto/Giachini (La Morra). Fermented 15-20 days in stainless steel, aged 2 years in 25-27 hectoliter Slavonian oak botti, then a year in cement and another in bottle. Traditional blending philosophy—the sum of parts expressing consistent terroir.

More about Cascina Fontana

Mario Fontana established his label in 1995, continuing work his grandfather Saverio began decades earlier in Perno, near Monforte d'Alba. His Barolo is made like it's still the 1960s—long maceration in concrete tanks and large neutral oak, cap management entirely by hand, aging in Slavonian oak casks for minimum two years then further in cement vats. No shortcuts, no modern affectations, just obsessive attention to detail and respect for tradition. This is new traditions in Barolo, rooted in how things were always meant to be made.

Flatiron Wines & Spirits has been hand-selling carefully chosen wine and spirits in New York City since 2012, from our shop on the border of the Flatiron and Union Square neighborhoods. We're not the biggest shop in the city, but we'd like to think we're among the most thoughtful: every bottle on our shelves earned its spot, and our team is on the floor — and on the phone, and in your inbox — to help you find what you actually want to drink.

The reviews below come from customers who've shopped with us in store and online. Some are glowing, some are constructive, and we read every one.
