The Lur Saluces family has owned Château de Fargues since 1472—the same family that managed Château d'Yquem for centuries. When LVMH acquired Yquem in 2004, Count Alexandre de Lur Saluces turned his full attention to Fargues, applying the same exacting standards. The estate's cooler microclimate means it's often the last property in Sauternes to finish harvest, waiting patiently for botrytis to concentrate each berry. Yields are vanishingly small: roughly one glass of wine per vine, rather than the usual bottle. The 18 hectares of Sémillon (80%) and Sauvignon Blanc (20%) rest on gravel and sand over clay, producing wines aged 30-36 months in new French oak. Where Yquem tends toward citrus and finesse, Fargues is known for a more substantial, spice-driven character. The 2006 offers freshness and elegance with lively acidity—not the richest vintage, but wonderfully balanced. Serve lightly chilled. These wines can evolve for 20 to 35 years.

Professional Reviews

Robert Parker

RP 93
"Tasted at the Sauternes 2006 ten-year on horizontal in Bordeaux. The 2006 de Fargues has a broody nose, piqued at being broached too young (at least for Château de Fargues). The palate is rounded on the entry with orange zest and marmalade notes, very good weight but it feels a little muted towards the finish at the moment. That is typical de Fargues - cellar this for another ten years because all the component parts are here. Tasted April 2016." -Neal Martin

Wine Spectator

WS 95
"This is really attention-getting, with a seamless toasted coconut note weaving through lush tarte tartine, creamed apricot and heather flavors. As exotic as the flavors are, they are tightly focused and framed by a mouthwatering date note, with a long, mouthwatering finish."

Wine Enthusiast

"A firm, densely structured wine, with the sweetness turned as much into richness. The flavors are of Seville orange zest, the richness coming from honey and almonds, balanced with dry botrytis. An impressive wine that needs time for aging." -Roger Voss
