Second Grand Cru Classé in 1855. The de Malle family presence traced to the 14th century; château built by Jacques de Malle around 1650 (now a classified historical monument). Through marriage in the early 18th century, the estate joined the Lur Saluces holdings alongside Château d'Yquem. Pierre de Bournazel later revitalized the property—replanting vineyards, renovating the château, rebuilding cellars. April 2024: sold to Luc Planty (son of Château Guiraud's Xavier Planty). 28 hectares under vine in Sauternes.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

"Pale-medium gold. Aromas of fruit salad, honey and herbs. High-pitched and slightly hard-edged, with penetrating peach and spicy oak flavors. Rather powerful and juicy but not especially fleshy or sweet. Currently a bit unyielding on the finish and in need of time. May well be better than it's showing today." -Stephen Tanzer

"The de Malle 2001 has a soft apricot and marmalade scented bouquet with just a touch of burnt toffee. The palate is ripe on the entry with a hint of spice. It is quite compact but with good weight in the mouth, though it cuts away abruptly on the marmalade-tinged finish and consequently I have to shave a couple of points off my score." -Neal Martin

"Rich, broad and very, very full. Relatively low in acidity and faintly raisiny, but no shortage of botrytis. Big build. Very rich and creamy."
