We've been fans of the beautiful wines of Le Piane for years now, and we're excited to welcome winemaker Christoph Künzli to the mezzanine to guide us through the tiny Piemontese region of Boca. A key figure in the revitalization of Alto Piemonte in general and Boca specifically, Christoph is a passionate advocate as well as a talented winemaker and presenter. Join us on mezzanine on Thursday, February 27 for a seminar featuring Christoph and the wines of Le Piane.

Christoph was born in Davos, Switzerland, and studied in the Chianti region, where he started to make small quantities of his own wine from a small vineyard. This awakened his passion for wine and lead him to start an import business for fine Italian wine in Switzerland, working with brands like Isole e Olena, Conterno Giovanni, and Ar.Pe.Pe.

Paolo de Marchi of Isole e Olena suggested that Christoph look into the areas in northern Piemonte as the potential for great wines that had been “forgotten." In 1998 he decided to put into action the crazy project known as “Le Piane,” and 27 years later, this work has reawakened the nearly forgotten wine region we now know as Boca.

Seating is very limited for this exclusive seminar. The cost of this seminar is $40 and a $20 credit at the store will be extended to each guest for a future purchase. We hope you can join us on Thursday, February 27 at 6pm on the mezzanine for this very special event.

A Mediterranean Paradise and its Emerging Talent: Mallorca's Cati Ribot

Not too far away from buzzy Ibiza, the Spanish island of Mallorca is home to one of Spain’s most dynamic young winemaker, Cati Ribot. Cati’s father planted international grapes like Chardonnay and Cabernet (it was, after all, the ‘90s). But after a stint working as a somm in Barcelona, and getting the chance to taste wines from all over the world, Cati realized the potential of her small Mediterranean island and its unique indigenous varieties. And so, they said adios to the French varieties and began planting varieties like Escursac, the local Malvasía de Banyalbufar, Girò Ros and Prensal Blanc.

Picture-Perfect Terroir: Two Single-Vineyard Rossese from Liguria

Regions like Burgundy and the Mosel are by-words for terroir. Part of the thrill of discovering those regions is exploring the subtle shifts in a wine that tiny changes in soil, slope, and exposure can make. But Burgundy and the Mosel don’t have a monopoly on that sort of terroir magic, as Giovanna Maccario’s two Rossese wines prove.
