"House of Stone" in Basque—and this cuvée comes from red sandstone parcels rich in iron oxide, mica, silica, and dolomite. Thérèse and Michel Riouspeyrous created Arretxea in 1989; sons Iban and Teo now manage 12 hectares. Certified organic since 1998, now biodynamic. Irouleguy is the only vineyard appellation in Basque country—one of France's smallest. 70% Petit Manseng, 30% Gros Manseng from west and southwest-facing slopes at the foot of Jara mountain. Aged 10 months in 1,200-liter foudres, then 12 months in bottle.

More about Domaine Arretxea

A seven-hectare dream born in 1989 on steep, terraced vineyards in the Basque country. Michel and Thérèse Riouspeyrous farm biodynamically in a landscape most people skip past on their way somewhere else, proving that serious wine grows anywhere when you're obsessive enough. These are proof that Irouléguy deserves its moment.
