Eric Nicolas farms biodynamically in the Coteaux du Loir, a cool, northern Loire Valley outpost. “Le Rouge Gorge” is pure Pineau d’Aunis from old vines on flinty clay soils, vinified with native yeasts and minimal sulfur.

Whole-cluster fermentation and aging in used barrels preserve the grape’s spice and lift. A precise, peppery expression of a rare variety from one of its finest stewards.

More about Domaine de Belliviere (Eric Nicolas)

Eric and Christine Nicolas walked away from Paris in 1995 to chase a dream in the Loire's remote Sarthe, planting 15 hectares from scratch. Now their son Clément runs it, organic and biodynamic, focused on Chenin Blanc and obscure local varieties nobody else wants to preserve. This is conviction-driven winemaking that refuses easy answers.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Bowler Wine has to say about this wine:

100% Pineau d'Aunis. The Nicolas family's gobelet-trained Pineau d'Aunis vines are scattered across 14 parcels and range in age from 10 to 50 years old. They are planted on flinty clay soils over tuffeau (soft limestone) and have low yields of around 25 hl/ha. The farming is certified-biodynamic and the harvest is by hand. The berries are destemmed and fermented spontaneously with native yeasts in old barrels. Maceration lasts up to a month, with occasional punchdowns. The wine is aged in used barrels and concrete eggs for a year. "Rouge Gorge" is named in honor of the red-throated European robins inhabiting the vineyards.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Loire Valley Wines

The Loire Valley is France’s greatest source of value for anyone looking for elegant, terroir-driven wines. Our collection celebrates the region’s great diversity, with the mineral-driven whites of Muscadet and Sancerre, the beautiful Chenin Blancs and Cabernet Francs from villages like Vouvray and Chinon, and natural wines from everywhere in the region. Sometimes wonderfully fresh and gulpable, sometimes serious and age-worthy, the prices are always very reasonable.
