Domaine de la Janasse is a powerhouse in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and their Cuvée Chaupin—crafted almost entirely from old-vine Grenache—is one of the purest, most elegant expressions of the appellation. Sourced from sandy, north-facing parcels that emphasize finesse over sheer force, this cuvée is always about detail, perfume, and grace.

The 2016 vintage is an absolute standout across the Southern Rhône, combining ripeness, freshness, and incredible balance. Chaupin 2016 is mesmerizing from the first pour: wild cherry, blackberry, garrigue, lavender, and pepper swirl around a silky, full-bodied frame. The tannins are ripe but seamless, and there’s a mineral lift that carries the wine through a long, haunting finish.

Already beautiful with air, this wine also has the structure to evolve gracefully for 15–20 years, gaining complexity and savory depth over time.

Pair with: roasted lamb, duck confit, Provençal herb dishes, or mushroom and truffle risotto.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

"Bright-rimmed magenta. Highly expressive red and blue fruit preserve aromas are complicated by hints of candied lavender, exotic spices and smoky minerals. Juicy black raspberry, boysenberry and spicecake flavors show superb concentration and appealing sweetness, and an undercurrent of minerality provides support. Delivers a compelling blend of power and finesse and finishes with gentle tannic grip, a strong suggestion of sweet blue fruit and fabulous persistence." -Josh Raynolds

"The terrific 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Chaupin has lived up to my expectations from last year's visit. It's 100% Grenache, includes some parcels planted back in 1912, and half was vinified with stems. From sandy sites, it showcases the ability of Grenache to ripen fully yet retain a sense of elegance and lightness. It's full-bodied and velvety but also vibrant, with black cherry fruit and hints of chocolate balanced by incredibly silky tannins and freshness on the finish. Really impressive stuff." -Joe Czerwinski

"100% Grenache, Cask sample, Smoky oak notes on the nose, and just enough fruit power to give balance on the palate. High tannin giving a chalky mouthfeel, and lots of dense fruit on the finish."

Decanter

"A deep, savoury nose with a back note of menthol overlaid with detailed bramble and raspberry. The palate has some fairly assertive tannins holding it all together, with good texture and relief. Nicely balanced, lots of detail to enjoy."

Wine Spectator

"Delightful plum, raspberry and blackberry compote flavors form the core, with racy, graphite-edged structure running underneath. Dark anise and tobacco notes check in throughout. The long finish lets the fruit linger." -James Molesworth

Wine Enthusiast

"Freshness and hints of violet, smoke and earth elevate this full-bodied, plump yet pristine Grenache. Blackberry and cherry flavors are ripe and mouthwatering, edged by sunny acidity and a thrilling crush of minerals. The forward, juicy demeanor is irresistible already but tightly wound tannins should meld and improve It should peak through 2030." -Anna Lee C. Iijima
