The Domaine Dujac Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2022 is a captivating wine from one of Burgundy’s most revered producers, showcasing the elegance and power of this iconic Grand Cru vineyard. Situated in the heart of Gevrey-Chambertin, Charmes-Chambertin is celebrated for its ability to produce wines with a harmonious balance of richness and finesse. The 2022 vintage, marked by a warm and balanced growing season, has delivered wines with exceptional concentration, vibrant fruit, and refined structure. Domaine Dujac’s dedication to organic viticulture and minimal-intervention winemaking ensures that this cuvée is a pure and authentic expression of its terroir.

On the nose, the wine reveals a bouquet of ripe black cherries, wild strawberries, and dark plums, complemented by floral notes of violets and subtle hints of rose petal. Layers of earthy truffle, sweet spices, and a touch of cedar add depth and complexity. On the palate, it is full-bodied and velvety, with silky tannins and a lively acidity that enhance its structure and balance. The wine’s mineral backbone underscores its precision, leading to a long, layered finish with echoes of red and dark fruits, spice, and a touch of earthiness.

This Charmes-Chambertin pairs beautifully with dishes such as roasted duck, lamb with herbs, or mushroom-stuffed pasta. While its vibrant fruit and polished tannins make it accessible in its youth, the Domaine Dujac Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2022 will reward extended cellaring over the next 15–20 years, gaining complexity and depth with time. It is a testament to the mastery of Domaine Dujac and the timeless allure of Gevrey-Chambertin’s Grand Cru vineyards.

Even very casual consumers of Burgundy have likely heard of Domaine Dujac, considered one of the very best producers in Morey-Saint-Denis. This is a rather astounding fact given that the Domaine is only 50 years old, a blink in the eye given the region's winemaking history.

When Jacques Seysses purchased the estate of Marcel Graillet in 1967, it was in disrepair and had been selling fruit off in bulk for some years. In less then a decade he had invested heavily in the property and found customers for his domaine bottled wines. The Dujac name begin to be seen at top restaurants in France and beyond.

Fast forward 20 years and you have Jacques' sons, Alec and Jeremy, taking over the reigns of the now expanded Domaine, with holdings in Gevrey, Chambolle, Vosne, Nuits and Puligny. Today Jeremy and his wife Diana Snowden (herself from a prominent wine-making family in Napa) are largely responsible for the operations.

The winemaking has evolved. Jacques was famous for using 100% whole clusters and 100% new oak. Jeremy and Diana are the first to tell you that adaptation is key. The climate is changing dramatically in Burgundy, and every vintage presents new challenges. Stem use is between 20% and 100%, depending on the vintage and the vineyard. Same goes for oak use. On a visit there last spring Jeremy was excited to show us his concrete egg tanks that were aging the Puligny-Montrachets.

All of this is to say that this now storied Domaine is in very good hands as it heads into the future.

"From a total of .70 ha in both Charmes and Mazoyères. Once again there is just enough wood present to be noticed but not intrude on the overtly floral and appealingly spicy mix of both red and dark cherry, violet and forest floor scents. There is a positively gorgeous mouthfeel if only average density to the medium-bodied flavors that tighten up substantially as the finish is robust and borderline rustic. This could use better depth but 10 or years of bottle aging should address that."

"The 2022 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has impressive purity and vigor on the nose: black cherries and boysenberry fruit, slightly glossy in style, perhaps a bit of summer sun imparting more opulence. The palate is medium-bodied with blackberry and bilberry fruit and saturated tannins. It’s harmonious, though it needs a little more mineralité toward the finish. There's a soupçon of hedonism and warmth here…there's nothing wrong with that." -Vinous

"At 14.1% alcohol, the 2022 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is the most powerful wine in the cellar, offering up aromas of cherries, plums, potpourri, orange rind and spices, followed by a full-bodied, rich and layered palate that's textural and muscular. Harvest at Domaine Dujac began on August 29. At the time, Jeremy Seysses thought of the vintage as potentially reminiscent of 2018—tasting the wines this winter, he feels that they're more delicate, while also admitting that he was even more cautious about extraction in 2022. Whatever the apposite analogy, the result is clear: a superb portfolio of beautifully balanced wines that unite charm and density. Readers, of course, will be familiar with the outlines of the Dujac approach to producing red Burgundy: organic farming, fermentation with a predominance of whole clusters and élevage in barrels largely sourced from Tonnellerie Rémond. None of that seems to have changed in 2022, despite a new winery where stainless steel vats have replaced concrete. The wines retain, nay exalt in, their distinctive identity."

"The deeply coloured Charmes boasts an impressively ripe plummy fruit with menthol, earth, and smoke accents. The tannic structure is silky and very fine – less grippy than many – and enough extract ensures that the finish lingers invitingly on the palate. The grapes are from four parcels split between Aux Charmes and Mazoyères; approximately 85% were fermented as whole clusters in 2022, with fewer punch-downs to avoid over-extraction. The result is elegant and very fine."
