Domaine Jaugaret is a holdout from another era—just 1.3 hectares in Saint-Julien, farmed traditionally and vinified with minimal intervention by Jean-François Fillastre, who took over the family domaine in the 1980s. Refusing to bow to the AOC’s push for modernization and fruit-forward polish, he was stripped of the right to label his wines as Saint-Julien. Instead, they now bear the humble “Vin de France” tag—but make no mistake: this is one of Bordeaux’s purest and most characterful reds.

The 2019 vintage shows real depth and structure: blackcurrant, graphite, cigar box, and damp earth, with firm tannins, savory bite, and zero gloss. This is claret in the pre-globalization sense—built to age, uncompromisingly dry, and full of terroir.

Decant it for a couple hours if drinking young, or forget it in the cellar for a decade or more. Best with food, time, and appreciation for wines that don’t play by the rules—but might outlive the ones that do.
