Domaine Michel Lafarge

Lafarge is one of the great names in Volnay, some would say the greatest. His wines are sought out the world over, and we are always excited when our allocation arrives.

Lafarge’s home territory is Volnay, though he also has holdings in nearby Beaune and Meursault. This is an old estate that started bottling their wines in the early 1900s. Only Armand Rousseau, the DRC, and maybe two or three other growers have that kind of history.

The wines of Lafarge are magical. Despite being made in a decidedly old-school style—really no different than a generation or even two ago—they display incredible purity and not a hint of rusticity. It is the same kind of magic that Jacky Truchot was able to conjure. We only wish we could get more.

"year old vines that sit just above Champans Super-fresh aromas are comprised by notes of black cherry, plum and raspberry coulis laced with exotic tea and discreet earth wisps. There is excellent size, weight and intensity to the larger-scaled and more muscular flavors that also possess notably fine-grained tannins on the hugely long and even more complex finale. This is potentially brilliant and very much worth your interest."

"The 2020 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru has (yet another) beautifully defined bouquet with black cherries, briary, crushed stone and pressed iris petals, unfolding with each swirl of the glass. You could nose this all day! The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly sappy entry, quite dense, grippy and voluminous, tapering slightly towards a cohesive and quite elegant finish. Utterly refined." -Vinous

"The 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes wafts from the glass with aromas of cassis, dark berry fruit and plums mingled with notions of warm spices, orange rind, rose petals and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, it's pure and vibrant, with lively acids, ripe tannins and a long, penetrating finish. It's a magical wine in the making. Frédéric Lafarge isn't given to overstatement, so when he declares 2020 to be "a very great vintage," without hesitation or qualification, it carries some weight. Simply tasting the Lafarge wines, however, without any commentary, would lead any taster to arrive at the same conclusion, as this is another magical portfolio from this Volnay reference point. Beautifully balanced, with vibrant acids, ripe tannins and moderate alcohols, one would never guess that all these reds were picked between August 20 and August 28 (the domaine's Aligoté came in the better part of a month later). Ultimately, time will tell which of the 2018–2019–2020 trio emerges as the most successful at this address (and in all three, the Lafarge family produced some of the wines of the vintage), but all serious Burgundy lovers are going to want a sampling of each in their cellars."

"The wine has a voluptuous, dark blackberry fruit, with exotic spice notes and a dense, velvety texture. Notably rich in extract and length, this 2020 is a standout, even for what is a consistently impressive wine. The domaine parcel of nearly a hectare is at the northeast corner of this premier cru, next to Taillepieds and just across the street from the intersection of Champans and Cailleret - Frédéric Lafarge maintains it partakes of all these characters."

Focus On: Burgundy

Burgundy has long been the world's most famous wine region. But, underneath all the prestige, this region can be hard to get to know.

While Burgundy offers many great trophies from top producers in well-known villages like Vosne Romanee and Puligny Montrachet, it also offers excellent values to anyone willing to explore beyond the famous names. Our collection– one of the largest in the U.S. – has plenty of both!

From the very basics of Burgundy's regions and wines to the specific terroirs of individual single vineyards--
everything you need to know about Bourgogne is just a click away!
