Elio Grasso is one of the star producers in the Barolo village of Monforte. They specialize in just one Cru: Ginestra. Ginestra is one of those great Barolo sites, like Rocche or Brunate, that face southeast, for the most part, ideal for scooping up the cool morning sun. But Ginestra stands apart for its intense concentration of limestone. It is one of only 10 Crus to be designated “Exceptional” in Antonio Galloni’s vineyard rankings.
Ginestra is itself divided into several sub-Crus, and Grasso actually releases several different Barolos from each specific site – all of which are quite deep and powerful in their own particular ways.

"Grasso's 2006 Barolo Gavarini Vigna Chiniera is laced with racy, perfumed red fruit, flowers and minerals. The wine gains weight and depth in the glass as its energy and vibrancy take center stage. This is a supremely beautiful Barolo where expressive aromatics, generous fruit and silky tannins come together with unusual grace and elegance. Sweet, floral notes add a sense of lift on the finish. The 2006 is the best Gavarini since the 1989, and who knows if one day it might not match that legendary Barolo. Readers won't want to miss the sublime 2006 Gavarini Vigna Chiniera." -Antonio Galloni

"A monolith, this is seemingly impenetrable for its carapace of tannins, though there is a kernel of sweet cherry, strawberry and tobacco flavors underneath. In the end, this is elegant, yet taut and full of tension."

"The Ferrero factory in Alba fills the air with delicious aromas of melted chocolate and roasted hazelnut. Those are the same fragrances you will enjoy here backed by standard Nebbiolo tones of wild berry, cola and earth. The tannins are drying, firm and help keep the palate clean."
