Difficulty level: Wine 101
Julia has spent the last 16 years writing about and talking about wine, and if there's one thing she's learned, it's that what most people find most intimidating about wine is the vocabulary. What does it mean when a wine is "austere?" What about tasting notes of "pencil shavings" or "pear drop"? How can we read between the lines on a shelf tag or professional review? If you've settled into some favorite regions and wine styles, but still find yourself lacking the words to explain your tastes and describe the wines in front of you, this class is for you. Julia will walk you through a delicious tasting while helping you interpret common wine terms, build your nose-to-memory connection, and develop a wine language that is meaningful to you.

This class will begin at 6:00pm on Tuesday, January 14 and run for approximately 90 minutes. Wines tasted in class will be available for purchase with a discount available to attendees only. Seating is limited.

Meet your instructor

Julia Burke

Julia has been working in the wine industry since 2008, when she wandered into a small Niagara Escarpment winery for a tasting and left with a job. Her roles since then have included wine (and beer) writer and editor, vineyard worker in Southern Wisconsin, retail buyer in Chicago, harvest intern in Stellenbosch, South Africa, and communications/education manager for Willamette Valley Wine. She is now Flatiron's events manager and buyer for New World wines.

A passionate educator, Julia has been teaching classes, seminars, private events and tutoring sessions on wine for over a decade. She is a certified WSET instructor and holds a WSET Diploma in Wine & Spirits as well as an Italian Wine Professional certification. Julia believes in the power of wine to facilitate important conversations about sustainability, agriculture, labor, memory and psychology, and she has never fallen out of love with wine's ability to combine topics from geography and microbiology to language, politics and history in unexpected ways.

Excellent Class - Well Taught

The presenter was fabulous. She was very good at helping us understand the terms that are best used in describing wines so that we can engage thoughtfully with sales clerks when seeking wine to our liking. She had a warm and engaging presence and her humor helped make the evening all the more enjoyable.

00 Wines 2022s have landed.

00 Wines 2022s have landed.

Those of you who are Oregon collectors need little introduction to 00 Wines. This project of Chris and Kathryn Hermann is in the 99th percentile when it comes to critical acclaim in the Willamette Valley. This is the extremely serious, buttoned-up side of this region, the side that convinced the top names in Burgundy to buy land here while they still could.

Vincent Gaudry's Sensational Sancerre (And a Very Vatan-Like Pinot Fin)

Vincent Gaudry's Sensational Sancerre (And a Very Vatan-Like Pinot Fin)

The French love Vincent Gaudry. He’s on top wine lists and, as you can see above, the French press revere him too. Partly it’s his devotion to that nearly-lost tradition of Sancerre. The French love their traditions.

Of course, they also love organic and biodynamic producers, and Vincent is a leader on both fronts: organic for 30 years and biodynamic for 25 (he began conversion soon after the 16-year-old Vincent joined his father at the domaine). Thirty-four years later he is a model for many of Sancerre’s greatest producers.

All Hail the King of Hungarian Rosé: Duzsi Tamas and his Killer Kékfrankos

When the King of Rosé crafts another vintage of his stunning, watermelon-hued wine, we have no choice but to kiss the ring.

This king is Tamás Dúzsi, a winemaker from Hungary’s Szekszárd region. He makes a whopping 25 different wines from a variety of native and international grapes, but the wine we love to drink is his rosé of Kékfrankos, a.k.a. Blaufränkisch.
