The Rothenberg vineyard is one of the Rheinhessen’s crown jewels—steep, red slate slopes above the Rhine that produce wines with unmistakable precision and depth. Gunderloch, a family estate with a legacy going back over 130 years, has long been the standard-bearer for this site, and their Grosses Gewächs (GG) bottling is a benchmark for dry German Riesling.

The 2023 vintage is all about clarity and focus. Tightly wound citrus, crushed herbs, and red slate minerality lead into a tense, linear palate with barely a whisper of weight. There's nothing showy here—just structure, salt, and quiet complexity. Fermented dry and aged on the lees, the wine already shows poise, but it’s built to unfold gracefully over the next 10–15 years.

For lovers of dry Mosel, Wachau Smaragd, or Chablis with extra voltage, Rothenberg GG 2023 is a grand cru Riesling that delivers power without excess—and place without compromise.

What importer Bowler Wine has to say about this wine...

Gunderloch’s crown jewel vineyard is the Nackenheimer Rothenberg, one of the top grosse lagen (grand cru’s) of the “Roter Hang” (a 5km stretch of steep vineyards along the Rhine river composed of iron-rich, blood-red slate and clay). The Rothenberg is almost a monopole for Gunderloch, and they are unquestionably the most important vintner working in the site. They pick between twenty and thirty parcels here from vines up to forty years old, vinifying them separately. The GG selections are macerated for a few days, then quickly pressed and placed in barrels without pre-clarification and spontaneously fermented to total dryness. The DNA of the Roter Hang is expressed as purely as possible here, perhaps even more so than the Niersteiner sites. Dark stone aromas accompany yellow fruits and savory green herbs (think marjoram, basil, etc) in a burnished, layered, extremely complex wine walking the line consistently between power and elegance.

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
