While it bears the “second wine” title, La Clarence de Haut-Brion has always been something more intentional than incidental. Named for Clarence Dillon, the American who purchased Haut-Brion in the 1930s, this cuvée is drawn from the estate’s younger vines—but handled with the same quiet rigor that defines the Grand Vin.

The 2021 vintage is cooler, more classical in structure. Less about opulence, more about proportion. Cabernet Franc and Merlot lead, offering red-toned fruit, graphite, and fine, persistent tannins. There’s none of the flash that defines riper vintages—only clarity, lift, and a long, smoky undertow that marks its Pessac-Léognan roots.

This isn’t just a prelude to Haut-Brion—it’s a snapshot of the estate’s identity in a leaner year, with all the calm authority that comes with it.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 92
"The 2021 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion is deep, fleshy and super-expressive. Like all of the wines in this vintage here, the Clarence is on the lighter side, but that is not a bad thing. Primary dark fruit, leather, spice and tobacco fill out the layers nicely." -Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

"One of the finest second wines in this vintage is the 2021 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion, a medium to full-bodied, deep and layered wine evocative of dark berries, plums, pipe tobacco and burning embers. Built around powdery tannins and lively acids, it's an elegant, seamless cuvée that does bear more than a passing resemblance to the grand vin." -William Kelley

Jancis Robinson

"Fragrant red-fruit notes. Broad and smooth on attack with finely integrated tannins. Palate a bit more subdued but fresh with firmness on the finish. Room for development." -James Lawther MW

"Dark chocolate and red cherries on the nose, so aromatic, rich and seductive. Joyful and lifted on the palate, strawberries and plums to the fore but creamy and chalky with such sappy, agile and lively energy. Lightly framed so you get the aerial expansion of flavour but the texture that grips is chalky and mineral giving a welcome salinity and touch of tobacco and smoke that lands on the tongue. Beautifully presented, smooth and well defined, such succulence and density with no let up through the palate. Intensity, clarity and focus. An excellent second wine in 2021." -Georgina Hindle

"Woodland fruits with a backdrop of black-pepper spices set the scene for the second-label wine of Haut-Brion. It is powerful, with some firm tannins and integrated acidity. Drink this fine wine from 2027." -Roger Voss
