La Spinetta’s Vursu series highlights its top Barbaresco crus, and Starderi, located in Neive, is the boldest of the bunch. Known for its clay and calcareous soils, Vigneto Starderi produces Nebbiolo with concentration, spice, and depth. The 2014 vintage was cooler and more challenging across Piedmont, but careful vineyard work and rigorous selection allowed La Spinetta to produce a wine of graceful ripeness and refined structure.

Aged 22 months in French oak (mostly used, with some new), the wine opens with aromas of black cherry, licorice, rose petal, crushed mint, and sweet spice. The palate is full and layered, with rich tannins that have begun to soften, allowing the dark fruit and balsamic notes to glide into a long, polished finish.

While still age-worthy, Starderi 2014 is drinking beautifully now with a decant, and pairs well with braised meats, wild mushroom dishes, or aged cheeses. It’s a great example of how La Spinetta bridges tradition and modernity—Barbaresco with muscle, but also poise.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

"The 2014 Barbaresco Vigneto Starderi is endowed with a huge center of fruit. Kirsch, rose petal, mint, dried flowers and hard candy fill out the wine's frame effortlessly. The firm Starderi tannins are present, but they are nearly buried by the sheer depth and luxuriousness of the fruit." -Antonio Galloni

"Following the Barbaresco Gallina Vursu, the 2014 Barbaresco Starderi Vürsù represents a clear step up in terms of intensity and structure. If the Gallina is about elegance and finesse, this wine is about brawn, personality and volume. Again, if we focus on mouthfeel alone, this Barbaresco delivers an etched and firm tannic structure that runs straight down the backbone of this wine. Yet, the wine is also composed and still at this moment in time. You get the feeling that the real action will start a few years from now." -Robert Parker

Kerin O'Keefe

"This has aromas suggesting dill, minestrone soup, toast and chopped celery. The assertive palate shows oak, raw red fruit and a green note of powdered sage but it lacks fruit richness. Grainy tannins leave an astringent finish."
