Laherte Frères’ Champagne “Les 7” Extra Brut NV is an extraordinary and rare cuvée that represents the essence of Champagne’s diverse heritage grapes. Composed of all seven permitted grape varieties—Pinot Meunier, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc, Arbanne, Petit Meslier, and Fromenteau—sourced from a single plot in Chavot, this Champagne is a true testament to Laherte Frères’ commitment to tradition and biodiversity. With a solera-style blend that includes reserve wines from vintages between 2005 and 2021, “Les 7” achieves remarkable depth and complexity. Vinified in oak barrels, this Extra Brut Champagne has a layered, terroir-driven character.

On the nose, “Les 7” reveals a complex bouquet of orchard fruits, citrus, white flowers, and subtle hints of herbs, underscored by brioche and mineral notes from the extended aging. The palate is full-bodied and intricate, with flavors of ripe apple, lemon zest, and a touch of spice, alongside a creamy texture and fine, persistent bubbles. The Extra Brut dosage keeps the wine focused and dry, highlighting its chalky minerality and providing a long, elegant finish.

“Les 7” pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes, from creamy seafood pastas to roasted poultry and aged cheeses, as its depth and structure complement rich flavors. This unique Champagne offers a taste of history and craftsmanship, reflecting Laherte Frères’ dedication to preserving Champagne’s traditional grape diversity, and is perfect for those seeking a distinctive, complex cuvée.

Aurélien Laherte believes Champagne should be for everyone. We agree.

Along with childhood best friend and fellow rising star, Raphaël Bérèche, they formed Terre de Vins, a down to earth trade organization. They bring together like-minded growers for a yearly tasting of vin clair (still wine, pre-bubbles) and finished Champagne to showcase their progressive wines.

Aurélien makes wines of power and whimsy, decadence and tension. Maybe it is because of his biodynamic approach, maybe it was his training with Antoine Sélosse or maybe he is simply one of the best vignerons in Champagne. No matter the reason, take advantage of this newsletter only pricing to experience it for yourself.

All of his wines are aged in neutral barrels, do not go through malolactic fermentation and have just enough dosage to balance the wine and showcase the terroir.

Seventh generation winegrower Aurélien Laherte is part of a dynamic, young generation making waves in Champagne and producing a fine array of terroir-driven Champagnes using a natural approach to viticulture and winemaking. Since taking the helm of his family’s estate in 2005, Aurelien has been a devoted practitioner of organic and biodynamic viticulture, striving to produce a lineup of blended and single-vineyard Champagnes that deeply expresses the identities of his unique terroirs. The vibrant, energetic and racy profile of Laherte Frères Champagnes has earned Aurélien a reputations as a rising star in the region.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 94
"The NV Extra Brut Les 7 (2016 base) is bright, precise and bursting with energy. This blend of seven varieties, co-planted and co-fermented, mixed with a perpetual reserve that goes back to 2005 for 40% of the wine, yields a Champagne of tremendous harmony. Classy and polished to the core, Les 7 is an absolute delight and one of the real stars in this range. At its essence, the traditions of Champagne are all based on blending. This wine shows just how well those principles work. Bottled with no dosage." -Vinous

Robert Parker

"Based on the 2017 vintage, complemented by reserve wines drawn from a solera established in 2005, the newly disgorged NV Extra-Brut Les 7 delivers aromas of buttered toast, nuts, white flowers and fresh bread. Medium to full-bodied, it's elegantly fleshy, with tangy acids and a chalky, gently mordant finish."

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
