Fornace is Le Ragnaie’s southernmost and warmest vineyard, sitting lower in elevation compared to the estate’s cooler, high-altitude plots. The 2020 vintage brings power and generosity, but winemaker Riccardo Campinoti’s light touch keeps the wine elegant and composed. This is Brunello with presence—layered and textural, but never overdone.

Ripe black cherry, plum skin, and dried rose lead the way, followed by sandalwood, sweet tobacco, and a subtle earthy savoriness. The tannins are fine and polished, giving the wine grip without harshness, and the acidity keeps it lifted and long. It’s a more extroverted side of Le Ragnaie’s lineup—ideal with bistecca, game, or truffle-laced pastas—but it still carries that unmistakable sense of place and restraint. A powerful but graceful Brunello from a standout site.

Le Ragnaie is the greatest thing to emerge in Montalcino so far this century. It may be the greatest thing to emerge in Montalcino since the rise of Soldera, with whom they have much in common: an uncompromising adherence to tradition (aging exclusively in large neutral Slavonian oak barrels, ultra-long macerations), natural farming, minimal intervention in the cellar, and excellent terroir.

But there is one way in which Le Ragnaie stands apart from Soldera that makes their wines even more extreme: high altitudes. Le Ragnaie farms the highest altitude vines in Brunello di Montalcino! Some vineyards are so high up that they are above Brunello di Montalcino's legal limit of 600 meters.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

"Crushed ashen stones, grilled herbs, underbrush and hints of smoke define the 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Fornace. It's soft-textured and round, with more black fruits than red and a core of cool-toned acidity that maintains balance as blood orange and saline minerals saturate. The 2020 finishes with a minty freshness contrasting edgy tannins and a slight citrus tinge that adds lovely complexities." -Eric Guido

"This wine usually shows a more relaxed character compared to the other bottles in this series of single-vineyard wines from Le Ragnaie. The 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Fornace draws its fruit from a vineyard located at 380 meters in elevation not too far from Mastrojanni. The site was once at the bottom of an ancient seabed, and there are round limestone rocks as a result. That theme of "roundness" is transferred to the palate, where the wine offers layers of plush and supple fruit. Like the others, it ages in large oak casks for 3.5 years and is bottled directly from the botte. Only 3,000 bottles were created. In a tasting of his cru wines, Riccardo Campinoti serves this wine last because it delivers a bigger sense of concentration and textural density (while remaining within the transparency of the house style)." -Monica Larner
