At over 600 meters, Le Ragnaie’s original estate vineyard is among the highest in Montalcino. The “VV” (Vigna Vecchia) bottling comes from the oldest vines on that site—deep-rooted Sangiovese planted in the 1960s, grown organically on soils of galestro and limestone. Riccardo Campinoti’s approach in the cellar is as restrained as it is thoughtful: long macerations, large botti, native yeast, and time. Nothing forced, everything earned.

The 2020 vintage brings clarity and balance, allowing the vineyard’s high-altitude character to shine: red cherry, rose petal, orange peel, and cool herbal tones—all lifted by acidity and framed by fine, chalky tannins. It’s not about power, but presence. The wine floats, then stretches—linear, tensile, and destined to evolve for decades.

For Brunello collectors who value terroir over ripeness, and for Sangiovese lovers who seek nuance above all, Le Ragnaie VV 2020 is a reference-point wine with a quiet but commanding voice.

Le Ragnaie is the greatest thing to emerge in Montalcino so far this century. It may be the greatest thing to emerge in Montalcino since the rise of Soldera, with whom they have much in common: an uncompromising adherence to tradition (aging exclusively in large neutral Slavonian oak barrels, ultra-long macerations), natural farming, minimal intervention in the cellar, and excellent terroir.

But there is one way in which Le Ragnaie stands apart from Soldera that makes their wines even more extreme: high altitudes. Le Ragnaie farms the highest altitude vines in Brunello di Montalcino! Some vineyards are so high up that they are above Brunello di Montalcino's legal limit of 600 meters.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2020 Brunello di Montalcino V.V. entices with a darkly floral blend of wilted violets and stone dust, giving way to pine shavings, spiced orange peels and crushed blackberries. It's elegant, with silken textures and polished red and black fruits that ride a wave of fresh acidity as violet inner florals amass toward the close. An air of potpourri resonates above a bed of fine-grained tannins as a bitter tinge of citrus-laced blackberry fades slowly. The 2020 V.V. is the most complete and classic wine from Le Ragnaie's lineup this year—in a word, spellbinding." -Eric Guido

"This is an outstanding wine from Le Ragnaie. The Brunello di Montalcino Ragnaie V. V. 2020 shows an inescapable mineral definition. The fruit comes from the estate's oldest vines, planted in 1968 on sandstone soils (with quartz inclusions) at an altitude of 600 metres. The bouquet is bright and fragrant, but the wine also has a saline or harsher note that gives it a good run to age and evolve. I love its elegant structure. Only 3,800 bottles were produced."

"With candied citrus fruits and ripe dark plums, the old bottling of Le Ragnaie expresses the warm south-western location of the 50-year-old parcel more clearly than the fresh altitude of 600 metres - at least on the nose, where woody nuances of vanilla and nutmeg emphasise the ripeness. On the palate, however, it shows its spicy side with iron and dusty tobacco. It is robustly built, has its typical strong tannins and will need time to harmonise in the cellar."

Wine Spectator

WS 95
"An impressive red, this boasts black cherry, raspberry, orange peel and fresh green herbal flavors. Everything is underscored by a dense swath of tannins, yet this remains balanced and integrated overall, with its youthful exuberance needing a few years to mellow. This persists with lasting ripe fruit and mineral elements."
