Luis Pato is a pioneering winemaker in Portugal's Bairrada region. Wine production on the family's Quinta do Ribeirinho dates to the 18th century; his father João began bottling estate wines in the 1950s-60s. Luis started producing in 1980, releasing the first pure Baga varietal wine that year. He farms 60-65 hectares across nine vineyards. In 1988, he planted ungrafted Baga vines to study pre-phylloxera wines and produced Portugal's first "Vinhas Velhas" wine. Vinha Pan comes from Panasqueira on southeast-facing chalky-clay soils. 100% Baga, destemmed, aged in French oak. A trained chemical engineer turned Baga evangelist.

"The 2017 Vinha Pan is a Baga aged for 24 months in 60% new French oak. It comes in at 13.6% alcohol. If you're wondering why to trade up from the silky and elegant Vinhas Velhas to this, there is a reason. The trade-up seems worth the extra bucks, but that's up to you. This is much deeper and more tightly wound, better structured overall and firmer on the finish. This graceful Baga will age better as well. It is not, to be sure, quite as pure, thanks to the extra wood, but it shows the ability to pull the wood in." —Mark Squires

More about Luis Pato

Luis Pato trained as a chemical engineer before taking over his father's winery in the early 1980s. He then revolutionized Bairrada winemaking by destemming Baga and aging in new oak—radical, considered, precise. His Vinha Pan, Vinha Barrosa, and the remarkable Pé Franco from ungrafted vines are some of Portugal's greatest reds.
