A grape variety found nowhere else on earth—rescued from near-extinction by one family. Moschomavro, meaning "black Muscat" though unrelated to the Muscat family, had nearly vanished by the 1970s after centuries of being blended anonymously with Xinomavro. In the 1990s, Konstantinos Diamantis and his son Dimitris discovered cuttings of very old vines in Siatista, a mountainous town in northwestern Greece that once rivalled Náoussa for wine renown, and began replanting. Today, Diamantis remains the only producer making a one hundred percent Moschomavro wine anywhere. The Magoutes vineyard sits at 800-850 meters elevation on rocky limestone and clay soils, farmed with minimal intervention. The grape delivers fragrant, juicy red fruit—raspberry, cherry—with floral aromatics, crushed stone minerality, and soft tannins at a light-to-medium body. Serve slightly chilled. For anyone seeking a wine experience that genuinely cannot be found anywhere else.
