Le Pergole Torte isn’t just one of Italy’s great wines—it’s a benchmark for what Sangiovese can be at its most refined. First produced in the late 1970s, it was among the first 100% Sangiovese wines to challenge the Chianti Classico status quo, and it’s since become a cult icon. The fruit comes from the oldest vines at Montevertine, high in the hills of Radda in Chianti, and the wine is crafted with a Burgundian sense of clarity, site, and restraint.

The 2020 vintage is beautifully lifted and detailed: bright red cherry, dried rose, sweet herbs, and a dusting of Tuscan earth. It’s silky but structured, with fine tannins and that effortless Montevertine balance—power without weight, length without heaviness. In magnum, everything is amplified: the freshness, the aging potential, the sense of occasion.

They stepped out of the consorzio because of their belief in Sangiovese, helping to create the Super-Tuscan movement. The prestige wine of Montevertine is only produced in outstanding vintages. This ultimate wine is aged in large Slavonian oak barrels for 18 months and then racked into small French oak (Allier) barrels for the final six month stage of its élevage. It is produced primarily from a two hectare vineyard planted in 1968 exclusively to Sangiovese vines with a north-northeast exposure.
