The Faset cru sits just above the town of Barbaresco, known for its well-exposed slopes and soils that produce wines with both perfume and poise. Paitin—a historic family estate committed to organic farming and traditional winemaking—brings clarity and elegance to this site in their 2021 release, a vintage marked by balance and freshness.

Fermented with native yeasts and aged in large, old Slavonian botti, the wine opens with red cherry, raspberry, and dried rose, backed by hints of anise, citrus peel, and fine earth. There’s lift and transparency here—Faset is never about sheer power, but about aromatic detail and precision. The tannins are present but polished, framing a wine that’s already compelling young, yet clearly built to evolve.

Pair it with truffle risotto, roast duck, or simply a few years of patience. Paitin’s Faset offers a more delicate, high-toned take on Barbaresco—ideal for those who value grace over grit.

Robert Parker

94 points

"The Paitin 2021 Barbaresco Faset shows terrific aromatic intensity with a combination of flavors that spans dried fruit, soft earthy tones, leaf and underbrush. It comes across as a classic interpretation of Nebbiolo with added complexity. The Basarin, with its typical Sant’Agata marl soils, is a wine of substance and power, but ultimately, the wine’s flavor profile veers toward ripeness and autumnal notes. It ages in large Slavonian oak casks for 20 months." —Robert Parker

Wine Enthusiast

"Opening with aromas of black cherry and boysenberry jam, this wine captivates with its depth. Sweet spices dance in the glass, reminiscent of cinnamon and nutmeg, along with a hint of sweet incense and the delicate promise of a yet-to-bloom rose. On the palate, it's a round and plush experience, as if mixed berries are being prepared to make jam. The fruit is forward and vibrant, with a mix of ripe and juicy flavors. The tannins, though ample and solid, are surprisingly ripe and giving, offering a balance of power and elegance."

More about Paitin

Freisa's forgotten strawberry charm revived. For the first time since the 1960s, Paitin is making wine from Freisa—Piedmont's spicy, high-tannin red that tastes of strawberry (its etymological namesake) and autumn spice. Their Langhe Freisa Bonina is generous, perfumed, and a perfect reminder that native grapes tell stories that imports can't.

Tasting Profile

Deep ruby with aromas of dark cherry, blackberry, licorice, and mineral notes. Medium to full-bodied with firm, elegant tannins, flavors of dark fruit, herbs, and earth with a long finish.

A recent visit to the Paitin estate in Neive was full of delicious wines and fascinating history. The Pasquero-Elia family has been working these vineyards since 1796, and bottling the wines as Barbaresco for more than a century, even before their village officially joined Barbaresco. Three generations of the family are at work today in the vineyards and cellar, working organically and crafting Nebbiolo wines with equal power and grace.
