Luca Roagna represents the fifth generation of his family in the Langhe, and his approach to winemaking is as uncompromising as it gets: certified organic viticulture, wild-yeast fermentation, sixty to seventy days of submerged-cap maceration, and roughly five years of aging in neutral wood and concrete before bottling without fining or filtration. The Albesani vineyard in Neive—a historic cru with calcareous-clay and sand soils—entered the Roagna portfolio with the 2014 vintage, and it has quickly become one of the estate's most celebrated bottlings. The 2020 growing season was excellent across Piedmont: early budbreak, crucial April rains that replenished water reserves, a warm but spike-free August, and cool September temperatures that slowed sugar development and allowed full phenolic ripeness in the Nebbiolo. Expect camphor, cedar, violet, and cherry, with tightly wound, fine-grained tannins and the kind of aging potential measured in decades. A Barbaresco of rare refinement.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 94
"The 2020 Barbaresco Albesani presents an elegant, restrained expression of Albesani. Dried cherry, crushed flowers, cedar, mint and pipe tobacco open with a bit of coaxing. This ethereal, haunting Barbaresco has to much to offer. It will be interesting to see if it gains weight with time in bottle. Today, it is very much on the delicate, aromatic side of things." -Antonio Galloni

"Broad and open, this red evokes plum, cherry, earth and eucalyptus flavors focused by vibrant acidity. Supple in texture, with firm yet well-integrated tannins informing the long, complex finish."

"Violet, perfumed berry, camphor and sun-warmed hay are just some of the aromas you'll find on the impressive 2020 Barbaresco Albesani from Roagna. Delicious and elegantly structured, the palate delivers succulent raspberry, ripe Marasca cherry, cake spice and blood orange before a star anise finish. Smooth tannins give it a velvety texture. A gorgeous wine. Drink through 2038." -Kerin O'Keefe
