Imagine walking through the rolling hills of Barbaresco, where the Basarin vineyard lies in the heart of the region. Sottimano’s 2021 Barbaresco captures the very essence of this celebrated vineyard, bringing together the power and grace that Nebbiolo can express when nurtured by the right hands.

The wine opens with a fresh burst of red fruit—ripe cherry, raspberry, and a touch of plum—accompanied by delicate floral notes of rose and violet. Beneath the fruit, subtle earthy elements—leather, dried herbs—start to emerge, grounding the wine with complexity. On the palate, Basarin is structured yet silky, with fine tannins that frame the vibrant fruit and enhance the wine’s natural freshness. The acidity is perfectly balanced, leading into a finish that lingers, with layers of fruit and earth woven together seamlessly.

This Barbaresco pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes, from roasted meats to pasta with rich sauces. Its elegance and balance make it a perfect match for both intimate meals and special occasions. With the potential for aging, Sottimano’s Basarin 2021 will continue to evolve over the next few years, but it’s already drinking wonderfully now. A true reflection of Barbaresco, this wine is both approachable and sophisticated, offering a taste of the region’s best.

Barbaresco's getting hot fast and we are now in what may be a fairly short window when good buying opportunities abound. Tighter allocations and higher prices seem to be just around the corner.

How did we get here? Sottimano's story explains a lot.

It started in the late 1960s, when Sottimano, based in Neive with vines there and in Treiso, was among the first to follow in Gaja's steps and set up shop selling domaine bottlings. You can still, very occasionally, find old bottles of Sottimano from the 1970s and they are amazing. Then, in the 1990s, Sottimano went through a modern phase. Like so many other producers, they made wine with too much new oak.

But the domaine started change things up in 2004. Not everything at once, of course, but between 2004 and around 2010, Sottimano cut down drastically on new wood, eliminated all chemicals in the vineyard, and switched to wild yeast fermentation. The results have been stunning. As Kerin O’Keefe puts it in her great book, Barolo & Barbaresco, Sottimano “has undergone a radical and very welcome change in all aspects of its wine-making philosophy [and] is now turning out terroir-driven Barbaresco that are both exquisite and complex.”

"The Barbaresco Basarin 2021 is a dense, rich wine. Preserved cherry, plum, lavender, rose petals, spices and new leather are recognisable. The natural intensity of the vintage is expressed in this decidedly dark, intense Barbaresco. However, the return to super-classic winemaking balances things out nicely. I expect the Basarin to be the most accessible of these 2021s." -Vinous

"This Barbaresco opens with a seductive nose that perks up the senses. Hints of spiced wild berries, smoked black tea, crushed dried leaves and baking spices swirl in the glass as delicate floral notes woo the senses even more. Elegant and refined yet with a classic Nebbiolo structure that highlights flavors of drying cherries alongside wild thyme and bay leaf that all lift from the palate with the rush acidity on the finish."
