Stefan Vetter is one of the key figures in the revival of serious, terroir-driven Silvaner, working with old vines and minimal intervention to create wines of purity and depth. Sandstein comes from sandstone soils, which give the wine a distinctive mineral backbone and a slightly more lifted, aromatic profile. The 2021 vintage is taut and electric, showing just how much finesse Silvaner can have.

Crisp pear, green apple, and Meyer lemon lead, with layers of wild herbs, white flowers, and a salty, flinty edge. The palate is focused and linear, with bright acidity and a textured, slightly waxy mouthfeel. It’s a perfect match for fresh seafood, asparagus, or Alpine cheeses—this is Silvaner with structure, nerve, and a sense of place.

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
