Benjamin Zidarich crafts this Vitovska from steep, rocky vineyards in Carso, where limestone soils and Adriatic breezes shape intensely mineral wines. The 2020 sees extended skin contact and aging in large Slavonian oak, capturing the grape’s delicate aromatics with a firm, textural core.

Farmed organically and fermented with native yeasts, it’s a benchmark expression of Vitovska — savory, stony, and deeply rooted in Friuli-Venezia Giulia’s rugged karst landscape.

This is soft upon entry yet quickly gains tension as saline minerals and tart orchard fruits give way to a savory herbal flourish. The 2020 leaves a staining of primary concentration, recalling dried nectarines and apricots while finishing remarkably long and intense. Aged for two years in large Slavonian casks, the Vitovska is a seamless and deeply stony wine. Its fruit character veers toward apricot and peach, yet in a subtle way—the limestone is doing the heavy lifting here, with the Vitovska serving as a mere vessel for the unfettered expression of rock. The wine finishes clean and long, with a sensation of almost mentholated coolness ringing on the palate long after swallowing. Whatever subtle tannins are present are melded beautifully with the palate-staining minerality, and the overall impression is one of freshness, complexity, and drive. A bold, uplifting, utterly delicious wine.
