A Killer Kabinett to Drink or Hold: Lauer's 2022 Fass 8
Florian Lauer has been at the very heart of the German wine revolution for the last 20 years. Working on the terrifyingly steep slopes of the Ayler Kupp, in the heart of the Saar, Florian has been a champion of intentional farming, old vines, natural fermentation, long lees aging and letting his wines naturally find their own equilibrium, whether it be bone-dry, off-dry or juicy-sweet.
He transmits crystal clear slate character into the glass while maintaining a lightness, ease, and downright deliciousness that is hard to resist. We eagerly await each new release and gobble up as much as we can. Today we are happy to offer a fresh vintage of one of our favorite Lauer cuvées, the 2022 Fass 8 Kupp Kabinett .
Vom Boden’s fearless leader Stephen Bitterolf describes the 2022 Fass 8 as “Absolutely nuts-o wine in 2022 – these are maybe the best Kabinetts Lauer has ever made? Which makes zero sense after 2021, I understand this, but still…”

Though 2021 has been heralded as the most exciting German vintage in a decade, Lauer's 2022s reveal an estate that constantly strives to reach even greater heights. If you’ve been following Florian’s work, you will not want to miss these, and if you’ve been curious to know what all the fuss is about, this is a perfect entry point. (and stay tuned for a chance to purchase the rest of the range later this week!)
The Fass 8 comes from vines ranging from 26-44 years old in a sheer, south facing slope in the middle of the iconic Kupp vineyard. A bottle tasted yesterday was absolutely delightful. With a touch of smokey reduction on the nose leading to lifted, ripe golden fruit on the palate with a tense, energized, crunchy texture. The wine clocks in at a very easy to love 8% alcohol (breakfast wine!) and the sweetness is perfectly balanced by plenty of fresh acidity.
It feels drier than perhaps you'd expect — and should age gracefully over at least the next 10-20 years. This is a total steal at today's special newsletter price, and is the absolute embodiment of why German riesling is STILL one of the greatest values in wine. Don’t sleep on what might just emerge as the Kabinett of the vintage!
