Mastroberardino is the historic reference-point producer of Taurasi in Campania. For decades, they have made rich, powerful, age-worthy wines from Aglianico. Many consider their 1968s to be among the greatest Italian wines ever.

They have a Barolo-ish profile: alluring aromatics, high acidity, power, length, and endurance. But the grape and Taurasi's intensely volcanic soils give the wines a special twist. Blind, you might believe a Mastroberardino ringer is a great Barolo, till you take the tinfoil off and see why it was just a little different from the rest. Maybe you got a touch of coffee on the nose, or a hint of leatheriness in the finish—just a little something to take it south of Rome.

Antonio Galloni

"The 1998 Taurasi Riserva Radici keeps me returning to the glass to take in its remarkably pretty yet earthy bouquet as ash and animal musk give way to worn leather, dried cherries and strawberries. It s soft and enveloping, boasting a citrusy acid profile that adds contrast, as tart cherry-berry fruits and mineral tones create a crunchy sensation toward the close. This finishes dry and lightly structured, yet it remains fresh, with fine tannins and a sweet and sour hint of spiced tangerine. The 1998 is a mature beauty seated comfortably in its drinking window." -Vinous

"Like the 1999, the estate’s 1998 Taurasi Radici Riserva is a straightforward offering. The French oak seems to come through a touch more than in other surrounding vintages, suggesting 1998 yielded fruit with less structure and depth to play off the oak. Despite the wine’s freshness, early signs of oxidation have begun to creep in. The supple, forward 1998 is an excellent choice for near-term drinking." -Robert Parker
