Cavallotto has a near-monopole holding in the magnificent Cru of Bricco Boschis, which has limestone-rich soils at some altitudes, and sandier layers at others. This allows Cavallotto to achieve a harmonious mix of elegance (from sand) and power (from limestone) within a single Cru. You get both rose petals -- the site's signature note -- and a structure that broods and unfolds seemingly without end. This is a classic Barolo from Piedmont, made with 100% Nebbiolo grapes from the Bricco Boschis vineyard in Castiglione Falletto. The wine is certified organic and vinified with traditional methods. The wine is aged for 36 months in large Slavonian oak casks. The wine has a garnet color and a complex nose of rose, violet, cherry and licorice. The palate is full-bodied, balanced and persistent, with firm tannins and bright acidity.

Left 4th of July Rare Wines

The village of Castiglione Falletto is rich with superstars—Giuseppe Mascarello, Brovia, Vietti, Scavino—and Cavallotto stands easily with the best of them. Of this elite group, Cavallotto's wines stand out for their deep fruit, brooding structure, rose petal aromatics, and incredible longevity.

Most of Cavallotto's grapes come from a hill called Bricco Boschis. Cavallotto owns all of it. Thanks to a mostly southern exposure at high altitude and a complex mix of limestone and clay, it's considered one of the top crus of a village known for many great crus. Cavallotto's San Giuseppe Riserva is made from the best grapes from the vineyard's oldest vines, mid-slope.

Cavallotto's other Riserva comes from Vignolo. It is next door to Bricco Boschis and just a little lower down the slope. The wine tends to be less powerful and more floral, and is perfect for drinking on a slightly earlier timescale than the San Giuseppe.

"Muscular and powerful, don’t search for elegance here. Bricco Boschis is an old style Barolo typical of Alfio Cavallotto and his passion for authentic wines. The concentration and power are impressive for the 2018 vintage. Prunes and leather, leafy lightness, a touch of orange and an almost grapefruit note are sustained by firm acidity on a large, full, biting palate built for the long haul, filled out with youthful fruit concentration."
