Bernard Baudry runs a multi-generational family estate in Chinon committed to organic farming and traditional methods. Harvests are 100% manual with a 50-person team for sorting. La Croix Boissée Blanc comes from a painfully rare 0.5-hectare parcel in Cravant planted by Bernard in 1994—making this "the greatest white Chinon." The south-exposed slope overlooks the Vienne River with clay-rich soils over white tuffeau limestone and iron. Only 2% of Chinon is white, though historically white Chinon was among the world's most sought wines when Dutch and English merchants developed the market. Winemaking is non-interventionist: native yeast fermentation, aging in 2-year-old or older barriques, no fining or filtration. The 2017 shows sappy pine, wet stones, and delicate florals with layers of fruit, spice, and energetic minerality. Firm body with chalky structure, complex and well-suited to further aging. A rare expression of Chenin Blanc from red wine country.

"The 2017 Chinon Blanc La Croix Boissée displays a pale straw-golden color and a very delicate and elegant bouquet of perfectly ripe yet precise and well-defined fruit flavors intertwined with very fine mineral notes. It is a full-bodied, fresh and lingering mineral Chenin Blanc with stimulating salinity and perfectly ripe, round and intense fruit that also characterizes the long and aromatic finish. This is a classic for Chinon, and it exemplarily combines the power, fruit and elegance with the characteristics of the Croix Boissée hill." —Stephan Reinhardt

More about Bernard Baudry

The Loire is home to some of the best-kept secrets in unsung heroes of world class wine. And no Loire Hero is making greater wines than Bernard Baudry.

The magic starts with their vineyard holdings, which are typically very old vines on gravel and sandy soils with La Croix Boissee having a layer of white limestone subsoil that gives the wine that unique mineral backbone and structural depth that sets many of the world's greatest wines apart. Yup, great exposition and white soils is a sort of magical formula. Clos Rougeard's got it, so does Chablis's Grand Cru Slope and some of the best vineyards in Cote d'Or. The Baudrys farm organically, harvest by hand, and make their wine without manipulation (fermentation is with natural yeasts).

Despite the similarities to some of the world's most famous and allocated wines, Baudry remains remarkably affordable and easy to find. Why? Probably because Bernard started completely from scratch. And because he and his son, Matthieu, who has taken over most of the Domaine's operations, are humble farmers quite removed from the hype and glam of high-end wine.
