There is only one Barolo at Bartolo Mascarello. Blended from four grand crus and aged in large old botti, this wine represents the most traditional, uncompromising vision of Barolo. No single-vineyard bottlings, no modern makeup—just Nebbiolo handled with love, patience, and conviction.

The 2019 vintage brings everything into balance: lifted aromatics of rose petal, sour cherry, tar, and mint give way to a tightly woven structure of fine tannins and vibrant acidity. There’s no flash here—just quiet depth and endless nuance. It’s Barolo that whispers rather than shouts, revealing its layers slowly over time.

In magnum, the aging potential is even greater. This is a wine for the cellar, for a future celebration, or for a long, contemplative evening with people who understand that sometimes the most profound things come from tradition, not trend.

Bartolo made a name for himself resisting the modernizing trends in the region, encapsulated by a message he put on a hand-drawn bottle label: “No Barriques, No Berlusconi”. He died a few years ago but the domain is now in the gifted hands of his daughter Maria Theresa, who has raised the profile even further with a series of fabulous vintages. Still hewing rigorously to tradition (long macerations, and no barriques!), they are one of the very few domains to still release just one Barolo made from a blend of all their parcels (as was generally the case before single vineyard cuvees started to appear in the 1960s). 30% of the Barolo comes from Rocche di Annunziata in La Morra; the rest from three different vineyards in the commune of Barolo: Rue, San Lorenzo and Cannubi.

"The 2019 Barolo is a very beautiful, delicate wine that captures the best this vintage has to offer. Gracious and light on its feet, with striking inner sweetness, the 2019 is captivating from the first taste. Kirsch, rose petal, mint, hard candy, cedar and orange zest all grace this super-classic, perfumed Barolo. Young Nebbiolo tannins are there, but they are very elegantly woven into the wine's frame. Vineyard sites are Cannubi, Ruè, Monrobiolo di Bussia and Le Rocche dell'Annunziata, co-fermented in the style that is such a house signature." -Vinous

"Coming to market this fall, the Bartolo Mascarello 2019 Barolo represents a classic vintage in between two challenging growing seasons. Both 2018 and 2020 were hotter than 2019, resulting in higher alcohol levels. With fruit harvested on October 8th and 9th, this expression from 2019 shows extra freshness and a more streamlined style compared to the texturally generous 2020 or the softer and more open-knit 2018. Extraction and structure came easily in 2019, and delicate pump-overs sufficed. Maria Teresa Mascarello opted against submerged cap fermentations in 2022, 2019, 2017 and 2013. It was performed in 2016, 2014 and 2010, however. The fruit represents a blend of Monrobiolo in Bussia (a site with a lease that ends in 2025), Rue and Cannubi in Barolo and Rocche dell’Annunziata in La Morra. San Lorenzo will return to the blend in 2020. This bottle promises a decisive, vertical delivery of fruit (lots of "skeleton and bones") with a pretty moment of crunch, elegant acidic freshness and tannic structure. If you are nostalgic for a tight, acidity-driven Barolo that is good for long cellar aging, the 2019 is for you."

"Compact and slow to emerge from the glass and with a minerally lift. Very youthful and with only hints of raspberry and cherry. Embryonic on the palate. Compact, fine yet persistent, almost aromatic tannins while fine, perfumed raspberry emerges along with tannic energy on the finish. Long, chalky mineral notes on the finish."

"Maria Teresa Mascarello compared the 2019 of her Barolo (which will be released in September 2023) with the famed 1999 vintage. Fermented and aged in oak for 36 months, this blend of four MGAs – Cannubi, Rocche dell'Annunziata, Monrobiolo di Bussia and Ruè – will, from 2020, also incorporate grapes from San Lorenzo. Full of earthy tones, tar, smoky woodland and the elegance of leafy lightness, it shines for its depth and complexity, with the first hints of bergamot and potpourri. The palate is stylish, with firm, youthful, grainy yet sweet tannins allied to refreshing acidity of amazing deli-Aldo Fiordelli,"

"The 2019 Barolo from Maria Teresa Mascarello is all about elegance and energy. Opening with heady aromas of red berry, spice and rose petal, it delivers flavors of spiced cranberry, juicy strawberry, star anise and blood orange. Vibrant and loaded with finesse, it has firm, refined tannins and reflecting the vintage, is still rather austere at this stage. It also promises fantastic aging potential. Just gorgeous."
