What is this wine?
Château Bellefont-Belcier’s Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé 2016 is a powerful yet polished Right Bank Bordeaux made primarily from Merlot, with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon completing the blend. The estate, located on the limestone slopes just south of Château Pavie, has a history dating back to the 18th century and is now known for its precision winemaking and organic viticulture. The 2016 vintage was aged in French oak (about 30–40% new) and reflects both the richness of the year and the elegance of Saint-Émilion’s great terroirs.

Why get this wine?
The 2016 vintage is one of Bordeaux’s modern classics—structured, ripe, and beautifully balanced—and Bellefont-Belcier crafted one of its finest wines to date. It combines the depth and plush fruit of Merlot with freshness and minerality from the limestone soils. Offering grand cru pedigree at a smart value, this wine is perfect for collectors and drinkers alike who appreciate Right Bank complexity and refinement.

What does this wine taste like?
Deep aromas of black cherry, plum, and blueberry unfold with notes of licorice, cocoa, and graphite. The palate is full-bodied and silky, with ripe tannins, layered fruit, and a long, elegant finish marked by mineral freshness.

When should you drink this wine?
Decant for an hour if drinking now, or cellar through 2040 for full maturity. Excellent with roast lamb, beef, or truffle-infused dishes.

Professional Reviews

Robert Parker

RP The 2016 Bellefont Belcier is blended of 65% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. It was aged for 20 months in 80% new and 20% in one-year-old barrels. Michel Rolland consults for this wine. Deep garnet-purple in color, it gives delicate dried flowers, garrigue, dusty soil and smoked meats over warm black plums and blackberry preserves with hints menthol. The palate is full-bodied, concentrated and muscular with a rock-solid structure and loads of layered black fruit in the mid-palate, with a lingering earthiness to the finish.

Decanter

D There are a lot of changes happening at Bellefont-Belcier right now. It's been under the ownership of Peter Kwok since December 2017, but there were two changes of ownership in the preceding five years. This means that Kwok's team took over the maturation of the 2016 vintage but was not responsible for its harvest or vinification. On wonderful terroir, this is full of the classic St-Emilion gloss in terms of its damson fruit expression and high heat, smoothed out by a smoulder of rosemary and juicy acids.

Wine Spectator

WS Warm and lush in feel, delivering soft-edged fig, boysenberry and blackberry compote flavors infused liberally with ganache and black licorice accents. Ample toast hints drape over the finish, and this is definitely accessible, but a good buried graphite note should also help it develop with a bit of cellaring.

Wine Enthusiast

WE This is a fruity, juicy wine, with soft tannins as well as a touch of toast. It has an immediacy to it, thanks to the forward fruit and generous tannins. At the same time, there is a core of dry structure that will allow it to age. 92
