"The 2021 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Vecchie Vigne Casa Pepe is dark and intense. Wet stone and sage hints offset violets and crushed blackberries. It's soothingly round and supple with a wave of ripe blackberries and sour citrus that gives way to an herbal note toward the close. The 2021 finishes with a tinge of saline minerality and fine-grained tannins, tapering off long. A pleasant note of primary concentration makes perfect punctuation." -Eric Guido

Vineyard
Sourced from the Casa Pepe vineyard: a 0.80 hectare vineyard planted in 1974 that is right in front of the winery.
Orientation
South-facing with a 12% incline.
Soil
Classic Abruzzo blue clay-marl. Soil more shallow at the top of the hill, a bit deeper at the bottom. Richer, deeper soils at the bottom of the slope, with distinct "speckled" limestone pebble lenses - crucial for added porosity / permeability.
Viticulture
Planted to pergola by Emidio Pepe in 1974. The big presence of silt and its humidity explains its ability to complete the phenolic cycle fully while keepin the soil cooler.
Vinification
Fermented in 22 - 30 HL cement tanks with natural yeast.
Aging
Aged for two years in cement before bottling.
