Cardedu is a family-run winery dedicated to showcasing the raw beauty of Sardinia’s native grapes. Their 2020 Cannonau di Sardegna ‘Caladu’ is an unadorned, terroir-driven expression of Cannonau (a close relative of Grenache), sourced from organically farmed vineyards in the rugged hills of Ogliastra, on the island’s eastern coast. With minimal intervention in the cellar, this wine is all about the sun, wind, and wild landscapes of Sardinia.

Juicy red cherry, wild raspberry, and dried fig unfold alongside hints of rosemary, black pepper, and a touch of smoky earth. The palate is vibrant yet structured, with soft tannins and refreshing acidity that keep it lifted and balanced. Compared to heavier, oak-aged Cannonau, Caladu leans into brightness and drinkability, making it an exciting alternative to mainland Grenache or Southern Rhône reds.

Best enjoyed with grilled lamb, rustic pastas, or aged Pecorino, this 2020 Cannonau can be served slightly chilled for a fresher take or allowed to open up for a more layered experience. A soulful, untamed Sardinian red that captures the island’s essence

Like Corsica, its neighbor to the north, Sardinia has what it takes for great wine: sunshine, moderating Mediterranean influence, interesting soils and microclimates. So why aren't we all chasing the latest cult Cannonaus?

We don't know for sure, but we are always excited to taste the new releases from the third-generation Loi family at Cardedu. They work organically, hand-harvesting from a variety of terroirs, and fermenting with natural yeasts. They've sent us brilliant bottled snapshots of their sunny, rocky Mediterranean island.

And, what's more, their wines are an incredible value. This is the upside of their island still being relatively undiscovered by the international food and wine scene: we get to explore this under-examined region for a bargain-basement price.
