Cult Castiglione Falletto traditionalism from a great vintage. Cavallotto farms Bricco Boschis as a near-monopole, and this is the estate's standard expression of that hill — Nebbiolo from across the cru, given the same uncompromising treatment as the famous Vigna San Giuseppe Riserva: long maceration, very long aging in Slavonian botti, and the patience that defines the Cavallotto family. 2001 is one of the great classical Piedmont vintages of the modern era, and at twenty-four years on the bottle, this Barolo has slipped into the heart of its drinking window — tar, dried rose, sweet earth, and that haunting Castiglione Falletto perfume. A textbook traditional Barolo at peak.

"I would be hard-pressed to name another Barolo that delivers as much pure drinking pleasure at its price point than Cavallotto's gorgeous 2001 Barolo Bricco Boschis. It is a muscular, structured wine with deeply expressive layers of tar, menthol, spice and dark cherry flavors that flow onto the palate with notable length and sustain. The Bricco Boschis can sometimes be a bit rustic, but in 2001 Cavallotto has turned out a beautiful wine that bodes extremely well for the 2001 Riservas. In a recent blind tasting that included many of the region's top single-vineyard bottlings this wine more than held its own. It is not to be missed." —Antonio Galloni

"Loads of plum, chocolate and spices on the nose here. Full-bodied, with supersoft tannins and a long, rich aftertaste. This gives you loads of everything in a reserved, determined way. Better than the 2000." —2005-10-01 00:00:00 -0400

More about Cavallotto

The village of Castiglione Falletto is rich with superstars—Giuseppe Mascarello, Brovia, Vietti, Scavino—and Cavallotto stands easily with the best of them. Of this elite group, Cavallotto's wines stand out for their deep fruit, brooding structure, rose petal aromatics, and incredible longevity.

Most of Cavallotto's grapes come from a hill called Bricco Boschis. Cavallotto owns all of it. Thanks to a mostly southern exposure at high altitude and a complex mix of limestone and clay, it's considered one of the top crus of a village known for many great crus. Cavallotto's San Giuseppe Riserva is made from the best grapes from the vineyard's oldest vines, mid-slope.

Cavallotto's other Riserva comes from Vignolo. It is next door to Bricco Boschis and just a little lower down the slope. The wine tends to be less powerful and more floral, and is perfect for drinking on a slightly earlier timescale than the San Giuseppe.

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Brasato al Barolo, agnolotti del plin in butter and sage, aged Castelmagno, or a slow-roasted bone-in veal chop. Game birds and truffle dishes belong here too — anything earthy that can meet the wine's mature complexity.

Tasting Profile

Fully mature mid-weight Barolo: dried rose, tar, sweet truffled earth, leather, and faded cherry. Fine-grained tannins are completely resolved, the acidity still bright, the finish long and savory. Classical, perfumed, and elegant rather than powerful.
