This is the one to reach for if you want to know what Moreau-Naudet does with Chablis's famous limestone: Montée de Tonnerre is consistently the domaine's most mineral-driven Premier Cru. The domaine's cuvée comes from a single hectare of roughly 50-year-old vines in the Chapelot lieu-dit, where sandy, rocky topsoil sits over Kimmeridgian limestone. That's where the wine gets its cutting edge. As a rule, the house is patient by Chablis standards, giving its wines unusually long aging and keeping barrel to no more than a third of its premiers crus. Stéphane Moreau, who modeled his approach on Vincent Dauvissat and Didier Dagueneau, died just before the 2016 harvest. His wife Virginie and his longtime cellar master Coco have carried the work on, and Stéphane and Virginie's daughter Nell joined in 2020. A 2024 Premier Cru from a house this careful is a treat to drink young, but it rewards patience too. Serve it chilled, not ice-cold.

"The 2024 Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre is a success, opening with notes of beeswax, lemon oil and pear mingled with Granny Smith apple and oyster shell. Medium- to full-bodied and exhibiting considerable ripeness for the vintage, it is built around a taut, chalky core and offers slightly more depth and amplitude than Moreau’s other premier crus this year." —Kristaps Karklins

More about Moreau-Naudet

Domaine Moreau-Naudet is a great source for excellent, nonconformist Chablis. Taking cues from legendary producers like Raveneau and Dauvissat, Moreau-Naudet makes ripe, shapely Chablis that define minerality with deeply concentrated substance. The flinty and austere wines that have become the norm for this region are less a reflection of the region’s true terroir and more a side-effect of high yield, early picking and machine harvesting. Moreau-Naudet does the opposite. By picking late and harvesting by hand, as well as tending their vineyards biodynamically, Moreau-Naudet is able to make complex wines that many Chablis producers with wines similarly priced have not.

Winemaker Stephane Moreau suffered an untimely and tragic death in August 2016. When he passed unexpectedly it sent a shock through Burgundy and the wine world beyond. However, his family and assistant winemaker rallied and worked hard to maintain Stephane's racy and detailed style for the 2016 vintage. Since then Stephane’s wife, Virginie Moreau-Naudet, has carried on her late husband’s philosophy and style with resounding success. Tasting these wines today we feel inspired and grateful for her and her family’s perseverance.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Raw oysters or clams on the half shell. Seared scallops with brown butter. Sole meunière. Roast chicken with tarragon cream. Gougères or aged Comté.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Montée de Tonnerre profile: lemon, green apple and white flowers over a pronounced flinty, chalky minerality. A modest share of barrel typically adds a touch of texture without masking the fruit, while the acidity stays taut and cutting. Medium-bodied and dry, it usually finishes long, saline and precise, like a more concentrated, more structured village Chablis.
