Oddero doesn’t do trends—they’ve been making Barolo the old-school way since before it was cool. And while most producers shipped out their 2001s ages ago, Oddero tucked away this Mondoca from Bussia and waited. And waited. Now, over 20 years later, they’ve finally let it out—and it’s worth the wait.

Mondoca is a top slice of Bussia, and 2001 was a dream vintage. This bottle has shed its early tannic armor and turned into something seriously elegant: dried roses, cherry, spice, a little earthy funk, all smooth and seamless now. No decanting stress, no cellaring required—just pop, pour, and enjoy a proper slice of Barolo history.

It’s rare to find aged Barolo straight from the producer, especially one like this. If you’re into traditional Nebbiolo—or just want to know what all the fuss is about—this is the good stuff.

60% Pinot Meunier, 25% Pinot Noir, 15% Chardonnay

Practicing
Vineyard
From best plots of 15-58 yr-old vines from Montagne de Reims, Massif St Thierry, and Vallee de l’Ardre. Incorporates biodynamic methods, along with vitiforestry
Soil
Mostly sand and a small proportion of silt
Viticulture
Incorporates biodynamic methods: mobile chicken coop to clean vineyard and fertilize the soils, encourage biodiversity; development of vitiforestry; careful hand pruning according to the moon; no chemical fertilizers or insecticides, only natural organic products; indigenous grass and plants; grinds up vine cuttings in the parcels; extensive debudding, green harvest; attentive trellissing; essential oils to diminish the doses of copper/sulfur; braiding of the vines for energy exchange
Vinification
100% 2020; Grapes are lightly pressed and fermented using natural yeast. Vinification occurs in jarres and oak barrels. No chaptalization, malolactic fermentation can occur but is not forced. The juice is bottled on fruit days in locally produced bottles. Alexandre bottles with 22 grams of sugar instead of the more typical 24 grams, resulting in a softer, finer mousse.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
